How We Approach Drainage Installations

Our approach to drainage installations is grounded in technical precision and full compliance with Approved Document H – Drainage and Waste Disposal. For larger projects, our qualified drainage engineers will design and map the proposed drainage systems, ensuring every component meets the requirements for inspection, maintenance and long-term durability.

Trench Excavation: Trenches are dug to a correct and consistent "fall" (slope) to facilitate efficient water flow. Each trench is typically 300mm wider than the pipe it contains and must allow for 300mm of cover above the pipework.

Pipe Bedding: Trenches are lined with pea shingle, providing a stable and protective bed for the pipework. This bedding reduces pipe movement and risk of damage.

Pipe Laying: Pipes are joined using a push-fit system with rubber seals. Fittings feature either spigots or sockets to ensure secure and leak-free connections. Layouts are designed for optimal access, allowing for rodding, testing, cleaning, and inspection.

Backfilling: Once installed and checked, trenches are backfilled using suitable materials, reinstating ground stability and surface finish.

Our expertise covers all types of drainage systems, including:

  • Surface Drainage: Effective removal of surface water using ditches, swales, and channels
  • Subsurface Drainage: Installed beneath soil to manage groundwater and improve soil structure
  • Slope Drainage: Redirects water efficiently on uneven or inclined terrains
  • Downspouts & Gutter Systems: Collects and conveys roof water into the surface or subsurface network

When to Consider a New Installation

New drainage installations may be required in several scenarios:

Where a fresh drainage system is needed to serve new kitchens, bathrooms, and external connections.

  • Extensions & Renovations

Adding new facilities often requires additional or updated drainage infrastructure.

  • Replacement of Failing Systems

Collapsed, corroded, or incorrectly sloped drains should be replaced to prevent structural and environmental damage.

  • Development Projects

From housing estates to commercial premises, schools, farms and hospitals, Smart Drainz handles the drainage scope of major building works.

Our skilled drain technicians ensure installation is fast, efficient, and disturbance is kept to a minimum. If you’re working in any of the areas we cover across the South of England, our knowledge and regulatory expertise make us the ideal partner.
